Attention, UW folks!
The Women Studies department is in desperate need of funds for its graduation ceremony. Our departmental budget managed to pay for the facilities for our ceremony, as well as some other basic requirements - but beyond that, everything is left for the students to fund themselves.

Could you find it in your heart of hearts to donate some money to the cause? Even a few dollars will help. Everything we receive will go towards things such as decorating our venue, printing nice programs, feeding our guests, and accomodating our musical performers.

I'm setting up a donation box in the main office of the Women Studies department. It's located in Padelford Hall, one of the first doors in the right-hand hallway from the main entrance.

If you have a few spare bucks, please consider donating them to the cause of an awesome, but underfunded, department. I love my department and the good work it does, and I want to honor its members in our graduation ceremony.

Thanks!

Though I don't regret not going to the general UW commencement, I do regret not going or at least attending the WS one even though I was jsut a minor. slightly off topic but can you believe that when I graduated, nobody in AES even told me about the departmental graduation? I know there was one but how about a lousy email or a message? I got nothing! (AND they screwed up the little thing about my grad paperwork, can you tell I got lots of love for AES?). But anyways...i'll devote the proceeds of my Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game for sale on Amazon to the grad cause. Can I paypal you the money when it sells?

do you know who is speaking at the ceremony by chance?

Seriously? You rock!!

Unfortunately I don't have a Paypal account ... would a check or money order be inconvenient for you? I can find out the department's info and send it to you.

I don't know much about AES, though what little contact I had with them wasn't very impressive. Back when I decided to take on a second major, I was split between WS and AES because they both offered a focus on women of color. A large part of my decision was the fact that the WS advisor got back to me within days to tell me about the program, while the AES advisor didn't contact me for weeks. I'm happy with how that decision worked out. :D

I do know who is speaking, because I'm sort of planning the ceremony. ^^; (Along with constraining the budget of the ceremony, the department's lack of money means that it doesn't have the staff to spare to do the planning.) Professor Ginorio is speaking, and we're also organizing a collaborative student speech.

Thank you again! You're awesome!!

I think i'll be heading down to campus sometime soon anyways so I think I can just drop off somethign then. Do you know if I write a check who specifically I make it out to?

God. Her horse and buggy response time doesn't surprise me. seriously, she doesn't even use email! AND students don't like to come to her office because once you start a conversation with her, she goes on for hours on end. I mean, the AES heads know about the problem...but for years they haven't gotten the guts to go on with it and throw her a retirement party.

oh wow, if Ginorio is speaking then I will certainly be there so long as I don't have work!

please tell me it's on a saturday because i'm not allowed to take days off for the first three months on the job.... :/

I just emailed the department's program coordinator to get info about payment. If you're willing to use cash, you can also use the donation box (which I'm bringing in on Monday).

The ceremony is on Sunday, June 10th from 1:30-3:00 at the Center for Urban Horticulture (near U Village). Hope that works for you!

I don't know how a university can just NOT give a graduation ceremony to one of its departments. If anything, why can't they just lump you up with another department?

I think we did actually have something but I was just really upset (yet at the same time not surprised considering how unorganized the dept is) that they wouldn't even let their own students know.

wait a minute, oh god, I just realized why I never got invited during that Spring of 06. I recently went through a debacle with my school/dept/degree affairs people because my dept advisor "misplaced" my grad application and so until two weeks ago, it said I never graduated. it all makes sense now...of course they wouldn't invite me because my 80 year old dept advisor didn't even have me on the list of graduating seniors. ....

....

As I understand it, every department needs to pay for its own graduation ceremony. It's just that most departments have a large enough budget that this isn't a problem, whereas smaller ones like Women Studies don't have much money to spare. But yeah, it kinds sucks.
