Two things:
1. My paid LJ account is running out in a week or so.
2. LJ hasn't gotten any less stupid in the past six months.
When LJ first started coming out with its ass-backwards policies, I decided that I would stay until my paid account expired. At that point, I'd see if it was worth it to renew my account.
LJ is still not acting like a company I want to give my money to, so I'll be moving over to InsaneJournal. (I already have an account there, but no content yet.) I'll probably get a paid account and move my journal content over there (assuming I can - I'm still learning about various migration tools).
I'll keep my basic account here for the purposes of reading and commenting on my friendslist, but besides that I don't expect to use it for anything.
FYI, if you'd like to be able to read my locked posts, you can get an InsaneJournal account for free and I'll friend you. That's what I've been using my IJ account for so far.

Amnesty International Report-Maze of Injustice: The failure to protect Indigenous women from sexual violence in the USA
DONATE
In May of this year, the progressive netroots pulled together to save a tiny women's shelter on a Lakota Sioux reservation in South Dakota. Thanks to over 680 strangers who donated a combined $27,000, Pretty Bird Woman House was able to keep its doors open for the duration and provide emergency shelter for 188 women and 132 children.
But just last month thieves broke into Pretty Bird Woman House - literally smashing holes through the walls. They stole the computers, the television, clothing, toiletries - all donated. Then arsonists set fire to the building.
Pretty Bird Woman House remains open, without a house, in an unheated, donated office. The tribal council has done all it can afford to do. Without a house, this sanctuary will die.
Pretty Bird Woman House needs another netroots miracle to survive. There is so much in the world we are powerless over. For Pretty Bird Woman House you can make a difference, make the world a better place, right here, right now, today.

I've already decided that I won't be renewing my paid account at the end of the year, barring some huge improvements in LJ-land (such as, perhaps, entirely new management). I'll stick around with a free account to follow my friends list, but whether I keep posting here will depend on what LJ fixes (or not) in the next few months.
So! In the meantime, I have accounts on both InsaneJournal and GreatestJournal under the same username. At the moment, I'm not posting in either one, just using them to follow people who have already left LJ. If/when I move out of LJ, I'll say so.
For now, I'm asking that anyone who's already made the move please friend me on those journals so I know where you are. I've already friended some people, but I may have missed your announcement or don't know your username.
Thanks!

Friday whee~
Thing the first: I am avoiding LJ, as well as most of the rest of the Internet, until I finish reading Deathly Hallows (which should be tonight). If there's something non-Harry Potter that I need to see before then, let me know.
Thing the second: I no longer have access to my university email account while I am not at work. Please use sigelphoenix at gmail dot com from now on.

I did a little purging of the friends list, because it was getting longer than my attention span, and also because I put semi-personal information into friends-locked entries. I used to friend back everyone who friended me, but then it occurred to me that I was randomly making my personal life accessible to people I don't know. I'm sure you're all nice people, but, you know. And I figured anyone whom I don't know who friends me does so for the political content, not the personal. Otherwise that's just creepy. All the political rants are open to the public, so this shouldn't really affect anyone, I think. And I, uh, don't want to make this some BNF-wannabe thing about how I have too many friends or something. Just wanted to give people a heads up.

Seattle-area folks!
I've totally been lax on making announcements about this, but SARVA Week is going on right now! For those of you unfamiliar with the event, SARVA (Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Awareness) Week is an annual event organized by C.O.R.E. (the Committee Organizing Rape Education, of which I am a volunteer). Through events, posters, and other displays, SARVA Week seeks to raise awareness on campus about the issues of sexual assault and relationship (domestic) violence.
Every night of this week through Thursday, there will be an event on campus in the HUB that educates people about sexual violence. (There was one just tonight and it was fabulous.) All events are free and open to the public.
( SARVA Week events )
I plan to go to all of these events. Please come and show your support!

The ever-industrious
tekanji of the Official Shrub.com Blog, working in conjunction with
revena, has launched The Iris Network in order to bring together women in the gaming community.
There's an online magazine, a blog directory, and - what I'm most excited about - forums where female and/or feminist gamers can meet and geek out together. Without having to worry about sexist harassment, without having feminist discussions silenced or harassed, and without being excluded from any boys' clubs.
(Oh, and "gamers" really does mean any kind of gamer - electronic, pencil and paper, or LARP. Me, I'm jazzed about the tabletop forums.)
The official site announcment is here. Go! Join!

Seattle-area folks:
The annual UW production of The Vagina Monologues will be running this Thursday, February 8th through Saturday, February 10th. Here are the details:
HUB Auditorium
8:00 p.m.
$7 (UW students can buy tickets in advance for $5)
Proceeds benefit Home Alive
This year's production is being directed by one of my former classmates, who is an awesome woman - even though I've seen the play twice, I can't wait to see what she does with it. I highly recommend going, especially if you've never seen the play before. I'll be going on Thursday night, if anyone wants to meet up!

I checked my email this afternoon to find that I suddenly have a paid account and extra icons. For a year. O_O From
dedwardsauve, for no occasion other than random generosity?
I ... I don't even know what to do with this. 100 icons ... *brain goes splodey*
I have to go find icons now! But maybe not until I'm back in Seattle and have a high-speed connection again. XD;;
So, anyway: thanks to
dedwardsauve for an out-of-the-blue gift that just made my day. :D A boatload of Awesome Points for you.
My next announcement is for my fellow UW students who are not yet seniors: I got an announcement from the Women Studies mailing list about "Queer 101," a freshman seminar offered through the General Studies department as GEN ST 197. The email I got made it sound pretty worthwhile - an anti-oppression approach to queer experience and history. Also, upon looking at the other freshman seminars available (which are apparently open to all non-seniors), I actually found a few interesting topics, like "Students of Color Persisting in Higher Education."
I hadn't really looked at General Studies before, because I was under the assumption that the courses would be boring. But it looks like there are some quite interesting, specialized courses. It's too bad that I only noticed this now, when I don't have room in my schedule for extra classes. But I thought I'd share, for those of you who still might be able to take them.

The Friends of the Seattle Public Library book sale is this weekend! An airplane hanger full of books for cheap, woo!
Unfortunately, many of the people I know who would like to go are out of town ... but if you're here and interested, the address and time are in the above link.
zinjadu and I are going bright and early Saturday morning to get a crack at the goods. You can also go on Sunday when things are even cheaper (but the selection, obviously, not as good).
And yes, I have more books than shelf space already. So what? >_>

Seattle-area folks:
I just got the following email from one of my school mailing lists.
We found two beautiful, fluffy cats abandoned by their former owners. They are sweet, friendly, and house-trained, just looking for a new home to share the love. The first cat is cuddly, loves to sleep at the foot of the bed, eager to find a comfortable resting place beside a person to call her own. The second is more of a quiet charmer, looks exactly like a deep gray lion, also known affectionately as Mr. Fluffy Pantaloons because of his fur-trousers.
Both are playful, indoor/outdoor, probably 2-3 years old. We are smitten but already have multiple cats, so just caretaking until the right people come along. They are really special.
Please email and I'll send photos.
Even though I really (really really really) want to, I really can't. D: D: D: But can anyone else? Maybe pass the word along?
I have the person's name and email address. If you're interested, I'll send them to you.
